The United States Congress is the bicameral legislature of the federal government of the United States of America, consisting of the Senate and the House of Representatives. The Congress meets in the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C.

Both senators and representatives are chosen through direct election. Each of the 435 members of the House of Representatives represents a district and serves a two-year term. House seats are apportioned among the states by population. The 100 Senators serve staggered six-year terms. Each state has two senators, regardless of population. Every two years, approximately one-third of the Senate is elected at a time. Re-election rates for incumbents often exceed 90%.

Article I of the Constitution vests all legislative power in Congress. The House and Senate are equal partners in the legislative process (legislation cannot be enacted without the consent of both chambers); however, the Constitution grants each chamber some unique powers. The Senate is uniquely empowered to ratify treaties and to approve top presidential appointments. Revenue-raising bills must originate in the House of Representatives, which also has the sole power of impeachment, while the Senate has the sole power to try impeachment cases.

The term Congress is also used to refer to a particular meeting of the national legislature, reckoned according to the terms of representatives. Therefore, a "Congress" covers two years. The current 111th Congress convened on January 6, 2009.

Why aren't members of The United States Congress held to the same work standards as other Federal employees?
Q. If I only work 3 days of the week, when I am expected to work 5, I will not keep my job very long. Granted, I am not a Federal employee, but I know many people who are and this standard applies to them as well. Why is Congress held to a different standard? They have the responsibility of legislating the laws of our country and they can't show up for a full work week? This is ridiculous.

A. Who do you think makes the standards? We, as the voters, can fire them at any election, but most often, re-elect the useless bastards. We have ourselves to blame for their excesses. They know they have almost limitless job security, barring some huge scandal or something of that nature. Come election time, we just mark the incumbent box and go on because we don't want to be troubled with making an important decision.

Why did the United States Congress have to act 3 times to recognize Native Americans as American Citizens?
Q. Why did the United States Congress have to act 3 times to recognize Native Americans as American Citizens?

A. first of all to correct several misconceptions here... native people whether on or off reservations are subject to all federal laws just like non natives are. if we live off the reservation as 70% of us do, we are subject to all state and local laws as well..just like everyone around us. if we live on the reservation we are not subject to state laws while on the reservation. it is no different than if you live on the border of massachusetts and new hampshire. mass residents do not follow nh laws unless they are in nh. the same is true for us. i might add that we pay all the same taxes too since so many think we don't. as for citizenship, native people were not granted citizenship..we were "claimed". this was one more way the government… [cont.]

  • Congress is so strange. A man gets up to speak and says nothing. Nobody listens. And when he sits down, everybody disagrees.
