From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. An essay is usually a short piece of writing which is quite often written from an author's personal point of view. Essays can consist of a number of elements, including: literary criticism, political manifestos, learned arguments, observations of daily life, recollections, and reflections of the author. The definition of an essay is vague, overlapping with those of an article and a short story. Almost all modern essays are written in prose, but works in verse have been dubbed essays (e.g. Alexander Pope's An Essay on Criticism and An Essay on Man). While brevity usually defines an essay, voluminous works like John Locke's An Essay Concerning Human Understanding and Thomas Malthus's An Essay on the Principle of Population provide counterexamples. Essays have become a major part of a formal education. Secondary students are taught structured essay formats to improve their writing skills, and admission essays are often used by universities in selecting applicants and, in the humanities and social sciences, as a way of assessing the performance of students during final exams. The concept of an "essay" has been extended to other mediums beyond writing. A film essay is a movie that often incorporates documentary film making styles and which focuses more on the evolution of a theme or an idea. A photographic essay is an attempt to cover a topic with a linked series of photographs; it may or may not have an accompanying text or captions. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License How important are college admissions essays? Q. I am applying to two texas colleges that have optional (non required) essays. I finished the "Issue of importance" essay, but i cannot think of anyone who has made a difference in my life, or any hardships i went through. Do these play a key role in getting admitted? Asked by chevelle ss - Thu Nov 5 19:28:41 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Essays have three functions: 1. They test whether a student can follow directions. 2. They indicate how well the student writes. 3. They give students the opportunity to explain problems with their records, or hardships they have had to overcome to attain their records. It is possible that poor performance for categories 1. and 2. could disqualify a student, and that an essay which covers category 3. well could qualify a student who otherwise would not be admitted. Otherwise, essays are usually not a determining factor in admissions. Answered by ownpool - Thu Nov 5 19:39:01 2009 How long should my apply texas college essays be? Q. I am trying to apply to both U of T and A&M in College Station. I have started my essays but do not know how long the average essay is. I know that the apply texas website states no more than 120 lines of text but what would be necessary for a good and comprehensive essay? Asked by emperor0074 - Tue Aug 11 17:09:36 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Remember that admissions is reading a ton of these everyday, and a long repetitive essay is the last thing they want to read, so if you are just writing more and more just to get to the word limit, don't. Short and sweet is the best, as long as you get your point through. A page or a page and a half is fine. Answered by :] - Tue Aug 11 17:28:50 2009 How important are the college supplement essays [the ones that want you to explain why you like the school]?
Q. In the common application, a lot of colleges have additional essays where they ask questions like "why do you like the school" and similar topics How important are these essays? Are they less important than the main essay? How long should they typically be? Asked by Ellie - Sun Dec 14 20:28:43 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. How important is the beef in the beef stew? Do your homework, find out all the best and worst things about the school and include them both in your essay. For example, "Even though the gym is a long distance from the next class, the bike path through the campus makes the trip a breeze." You should make it concise, that it, don't be padding it just to take up space, because they don't like to be conned, and they'll know, c'mon, they're college graduates. Make it two or three double spaced pages. Use your spell checker. Purchase a copy of "The Elements of Style" by Strunk and White. It will be a godsend when you're writing any paper for college. You can do this! Answered by wo_manifest - Sun Dec 14 20:41:51 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "essays" Pages in category "Essays"The following 17 pages are in this category, out of 17 total. ACE
